Recommended by  Mike Mitro: Mitro_m@surreyschools.ca (LTSS Basketball Director)

"Sarah has been the oncourt leader of her team ever since arriving at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary. She is a special player and gifted athlete who works hard to better herself both on the court and off. In addition to being her senior girls basketball MVP, top scorer, leader in steals & assists and made the most 3 pointers, she also was the schools athlete of the year and top leadership student. She would be an ideal candidate for college teams looking for a versitile athlete and creative scorer"

Thank You for taking the time to review my profile and videos.  My name is Sarah Buckingham and I have just completed my 1st season with the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), participating in the Explorer division of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association Conference in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports league (CIS).

During my first season at UNBC I played in all 20 league games, starting in 8 and ended the season with an average playing time of 17.8 mins, and finished 4th in scoring for my team.  My season highlights include scoring 24 points (5 assists, 33 mins) against division rivals University of Fraser Valley.  I have been the starting point guard/shooting guard on my high school team as well as my club team, AthElite Basketball Academy.  I have been awarded the MVP for my high school team the past 5 seasons and I received my High School's 2013/2014 Grade 12 Female Athlete of the year & 2013/2014 overall Outstanding Female Athlete of the year.  In 2012/2013 I was awarded the Grade 11 Female Athlete of the year, 2012/2013 overall Outstanding Female Athlete of the year and our schools 2012/2013 Panther Spirit Award (for excellence in sport, leadership, school service, character & dedication).   I consider myself to be a team player and I go into every game and practice with a strong work ethic. I thrive in a competitive environment and I love being faced with a challenge.

As a student, I graduated with Honours from Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary and currently have a 3.75 GPA in my first years studies at the University of Northern British Columbia.

As a college athlete I hope to gain more knowledge about the game and to continually improve my skills. Most importantly, I want to make a difference on my team, doing everything it takes to make us successful. I want to be challenged which, in turn, will help me become the best possible player while keeping up with my studies. I am interested in both kinesiology and education and I hope to study one of these areas at college.

Playing Ability (comment)

Sarah played the one spot ( point guard ) for us the past two years , but she is best suited for the two spot ( shooting guard ) at the post secondary level. This helped her immensely in developing and improving her ball handling and leadership skills. Sarah is a very keen competitor, on many occasions not coming off the floor for the entire game. She is a very confident skilled shooter, both 3 pointers and mid range jumpers ,that can catch and shoot very well or show and go (drive ) to create and get to the rim. Sarah was our leading scorer and has a high basketball acumen to make her the player she is. Sarah will be a terrific asset to any team she plays on.

Personality (comment)

Sarah is kind and considerate teammate with a high competitive nature. She wants to improve and understand concepts and strategies within the game to make herself better. She will help and do whatever she can to make her team better. I gave her several challenges this year which she met or exceeded.

Playing Ability

Sarah's quickness and foot speed is a huge attribute to her defensive ability and speed off the dribble. She can contain opponents one on one full court, possession after possession. She is long and has a very quick reaction time. She has great aerobic and anaerobic stamina which allows her to compete at full speed for large periods of time.

Personality

Sarah is very friendly and kind, and is a great team mate. She is a silent competitor and leads through example on the floor. Sarah is a pleasure to coach and responds well to challenges. She is a great listener and when she is focused has the ability to make instant changes to situations when asked. Her verbal leadership is developing more and more every game and practice as she realizes how important it is to her team mates to lead by example as well as hold herself and others accountable.

UNBC welcomed UFV to the Northern Sport Centre, as they hosted their final home weekend of the season with the year winding down. The women's team is getting better by the week, as a ton of first and second years are receiving a lot of playing time. Saturday marked the final home game for 5th year's Kellieann Floyt and Sarah Robin. (couple of nice highlights of Sarah are shown)

UNBC versus MacEwan Griffins: Buckingham with 11 points off the bench

PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The MacEwan University Griffins swept the series 4-0 against the UNBC Timberwolves after a 75-62 win on Saturday night. The Griffins improve to 12-4 while the Timberwolves drop to 2-14.

The Griffins were led by fourth year forward Kelly Fagan (Vancouver, BC) with 22 points and seven rebounds. Kendall Lyndon (Chehalis, WA) complimented Fagan's performance with 20 points and nine assists of her own.

The Timberwolves were once again led by Vasiliki Louka (Athens, GRE) who scored a team high 13 points and eight rebounds. Rookie guard Sarah Buckingham (Surrey, BC) had a strong outing off the bench providing energy and hustle contributing to her 11 points.

Just like the previous outing, both teams came out hot, with both teams shooting 45% from the field. Kelly Fagan (Vancouver, BC) dropped 11 points in the opening quarter, and dominated the glass with five rebounds. The Timberwolves spread the ball around, and managed points from both the bench and starters. The Griffins pulled away in the second quarter thanks to a 12-0 run. Lyndon netted eight of her 20 points in the second quarter alone while Fagan led scoring at half with 17 points. Heading into the break the Griffins controlled the game with a 44-29 lead.

Louka was strong in the second half for the Timberwolves netting seven points in the third quarter. Even with the Twolves pushing the pace the Griffins were able to hold their lead. Outscoring UNBC in all but the final quarter. In the end the Griffins came out on top with a 75-62 final over the Timberwolves.

The MacEwan University Griffins return home to host the UBC Okanagan Heat in a double header February 6-7.

The UNBC Timberwolves host their final home games of the season next weekend when they host the UFV Cascades.

UNBC versus Mount Royal Cougars

Prince George, BC - The Timberwolves fought a closely contested game Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre. The Mount Royal Cougars defeated the UNBC Timberwolves 60-59 in Canada West women's basketball action. The Timberwolves fall to 0-5 while the Cougars advance to 2-3.

Cougars guard Jayla Verney led the Cougars with 28 points and reeked havoc for the Timberwolves with four steals. The Cougars took their first lead of the game after a successfully converted And-1 by Candice Buckett with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Timberwolves Vasiliila Louka scored a career high 18 points, and had a strong outing defensively with 14 rebounds and three blocks.

The Cougars trailed for the majority of the game, it took a strong second half defensively to level the game and eventually pull ahead. The Cougars showed great composure throughout the dying minutes of the game, coming back with 48 seconds remaining to break the deadlock and go ahead by one. Cougars guard Jayla Verney, drew two free throws off a strong drive off a solid pick from Yasmene Saghir. Jayla converted both efforts and gave the Cougars the 60-59 lead. With 48 seconds remaining, the Cougars were able to hold off a late push from the Timberwolves, after Tyleigha Nelson intercepted the Timberwolves inbound with two seconds remaining.

The UNBC Timberwolves started the game strong, feeding off guard play between Sarah Robin and Sarah Buckingham. The two guards showed exceptional playmaking ability as they fed the Timberwolves forwards in the paint, as well as converting a combined 20 points. The Cougars found it extremely difficult to deal with the size and strength of the Timberwolves forwards, but in the end the Cougars would hold on for a 60-59 final.

Both the MRU Cougars and the UNBC Timberwolves return to action again tomorrow night at the Northern Sports Centre. The game is set to tipoff at 5 p.m. and will be streamed live at canadawest.tv.
